i am Puerto Rican... i was raised and born in Levittown, Tao Baja, Puerto Rico. When i went to america, I new no english... and the this is my 3rd year talking it. i was teased by white kids saying that im so stupid and i cant even right or spell proper english.. but then later i told them, what about you? at least i know some english and you? how many lanuages do you speak? i can speak 3 languages (spanish, portuguese and english) and they cant say **** about me not being smart. and those people only knew english... i mean when i went to Spain, no one made fun of me being Rican. my classmates in America called me a "****" and a "Spanish leftover" im like WTF? first of all, the type of Puerto Rican i am is Taino. and yes there is some blood in my family from Spain generations ago... is this an American thing or what!? it just pisses me off and their so ignorant! either get over the fact of my race or let it ruin your life..

No, it's not a typical American. Some people are just dumb and all you can do is ignore them and learn better English than them. Usually when you learn a new language, you might be able to speak it more properly than the native speakers. So just keep your head up high and remember not all Americans are like this.

Kids are cruel and mean everywhere. It's not an American thing, it's an ignorance thing. Why don't you find some spanish speaking kids and talk to them in Spanish, point at those kids, and laugh. That would really piss them off. Keep your head up girl!

Man!!! I wish I knew two languages better then I do.
Don't worry about hateful Americans. Some day I am sure this country won't have to many of them left around. I am as white as a sheet by the way.

no it´s not an american issue but an ignorance issue. americans who are better educated will appreciate your desire to improve your language skills, not making fun of your misteps. I'm not american but i lived in the US for almost 9 years and never felt discriminated against because i've known english since i was a kid. but i know there are people out there who cannot see beyond their belly button.....
