no. Provide them with the proper care and they will live for a good ten years or more. I grew my beardie from a hatchling. I gave him to a friend when I moved, but I had him for 2 years and he was 17 inches long, had always had a great appetite, was always very friendly and healthy.

You have to be careful when you feed them - don't give them anything larger than the space between their eyes. Also, keep them on paper towels or newspaper rather than sand, bark, walnut shell, etc. - the babies get this in their mouth when they eat and can't digest it, internal impaction from substrate can cause death.

With proper care they can and will thrive, but yes, generally reptiles tend to be more fragile/sensitive/high maintenance when they are very young, and some people prefer to buy well-started juveniles or subadults.

within the first three months you will know if you have a winner or loser. i got mine at 2 weeks and about the size of a quarter. he's about 6 years now and a tubby b*stard.
