You should be able to set up a password to enable security on your network. Check the instructions that came with your router. If you can't find the booklet or disc you can probably download from the manufacturer's website.

The easiest way to prevent this without turning on protection is to go into the router settings and stop the router from broadcasting the signal. You could rename the network and stop broadcasting it. After that you will need to automatically setup this wireless connection on each of the computers you will be using wirelessly. By not broadcasting the signal someone would not be able to find your wireless network unless you told them the name of it.

You should be able to set up a WEP encryption relatively easily through your router. Creating a WEP encryption makes a pass-code necessary to use your connection. Your signal will still be visible to people but they will not be able to connect without the pass-code. Try checking your router's owner's manual or website for instructions on how to set up a WEP encryption.

You need to encrypt the signal or at least set the access list to just allow your MAC address. Each router has a way but it is pretty straight forward.
