The 4-string is the easiest to learn on because it has the skinniest neck. The 5-string has an extra low B string, and the neck is slightly wider. The 6-string? Better have some pretty big hands. I've seen an 18-string bass, but it is really a 6-string where the string have been tripled. These days if you have the money you can have just about anything made. I recommend that you start with a 4-string, and learn how to play that, and then add the bigger one (or ones) later if you want to. Some of the most fantastic bass players on Earth play the 4-string bass.

2 extra strings on a bass, the additional strings are reduce than the usual 4, and tuned a ultimate fourth scale back. So on a 4 string bass, your low string is an E. On a 5 string, the brand new string is beneath the E string, and tuned to A. On a 6 string, the brand new string is tuned to D. I wouldnt advise purchasing a five or six string in case you are a newbie. Gain knowledge of the fundamentals of a four string first. Many bass gamers dont even bother with extra strings - if you're good, you dont want them.

the more strings on it, the harder it might be to play. Also the more expensive it might be. That goes for quality meaning brand, which there are a few good brands out there. I personally play 5 and 6 string basses, but 4 is just fine. You don't have to have alot of strings to be good. Victor wooten plays mostly on 4 stringers and hes amazing.

Sound is another factor, you could get a bass with active pickups or passive pickups. I personally like active because the sound is so crisp and clear. Usually with passive its more of a warm fuzzy tone. But every player will have their own personal preference.

In the end if you want extended low range and good tone out of a bass, go for a 5 string with active pickups. If I knew of a price range or what kind of tone you wanted I would be able to help more.

4 is standard. The strings are the same tuning as the 4 lowest strings on a standard guitar (although an octave lower).
Because it is standard, it is more common, cheaper and easier.
5 and 6 string bass guitars are less and less common and should be for more advanced players.

well the strings obviously, but i play 4string and it has a high playability but the advantages of more strings give you wider sounds which may be good if you are more experienced
