Just when think you know the answer, some silicon-based lifeform named HAL won't open the vent lock for you! I think those guys were thinkin, "Hey, I've got a badass computer with like 4 billion teraflops of memory and mixes a mean martini!" But when it goes bad, it goes bad. Got it? I don't.

I think it all depends on the person and his/her environment. A stockbrocker living in New York City will DEFINITELY benefit from a computer, while a farmer in the hills of the Himalayas will not garner much from having a computer in the house (if they have electricity, that is).
Generally speaking though, as our life is becoming more and more digitalized by the minute with emails, internet and what not, it usually is more efficient to have a computer. Of course, if one doesn't really need to use it all day - there are tonnes of internet cafes etc. that can replace the cost not only to buy a computer that actually runs well, but also the electricity bill that comes along with it.
Just a thought -- hope this helps :)

My computer was the best gift I have ever received. I am in touch with family members that I long ago lost contact with! I play games. I love this site. In the cold snow filled days it has been a wonderful tool to keep me busy. I haven't Had a word of talk therapy sense I've owned this computer. Three years and counting! I am no longer depressed and I am off of anti-depressant medications that I took for 16 years! I can talk to my son every day via e-mail. Oh I love my computer.
