me and my feance are going to apply for food stamps but we make 500 more than what is allowed. but are morgage is almost a 1,000 a month and are utiltys are 400 a month. his pay check is 900 every two weeks. and it all goes to the morgage. and then the next pay check pays for the utilitys and the over drafts fee. and then were left with almost no money for the food for a month. and dog food. i just think this is unfair. anyone else have a problem like this? or had one? no answers where all your doing is griping.

Do you have an income ? I know it sucks ( especially if you have small children ) but if finances are that tight, and you dont want to move to a cheaper place....then you need a second income ! My husband and I only saw each other 1 day a week for several years because of a similar situation ( we couldnt afford daycare so we work opposite shifts )....I think the system is unfair too ( especially when people I KNOW make more are getting state aid ) but its not going to change anytime soon. >:(

This is not a question of fair/unfair but reasonable/unreasonable.

Although your question doesn't indicate the amount YOU earn but additional income would go a long way to resolve your issue.

Also, in many communities, there are food share groups that allow you to pay about $25 per month and in return you receive meat, vegetables, rice and other basic staples.

Finally, consider minimizing all extra expenses, i.e., dog, vet care, and dog food.

Food stamps are for people who NEED them; not for people who spend beyond their means. Using the money figures you have shown, your fiance doesn't make enough money to have $1000.00 mortgage. Of course, that is none of my business but that is what the agency looks at when deciding to distribute aid. You make too much money - you just don't seem to spend it well.

Do you work? Can he get a part-time job, can you? Many of us have been in your position - and what most of us have done is take a second job, get rid of the cell phone, the SUV or large car, stop eating out, -whatever is necessary to make ends meet. You are at the beginning of your life together...now is a good time to learn these lessons.....

I have a problem with governmental program eligibility that's at least as bad as yours, in a completely different program, but I can tell you that your situation is completely fair for the government to say you all are ineligible for food stamps based on the data you provide. The government is not responsible for your spending more than you make. YOU are. God Bless you.

I've been caught in a vaguely similar catch-22, and I can sympathize.

Others note that your housing costs are waaaaay out of your income proportions. I've been there, too, although not as a homeowner.

Do you work? Could you? If not (or in addition), you may want to consider a housemate. If not, you should give serious thought to selling and moving to cheaper dwellings.

The limit for welfare must be for those who cannot really afford the standard of living and not the expenses of people resulting to no budget for food.

Get a job. Better yet, get a career. You aren't married so you are not caring for children.
Of course it is not unfair. Stop complaining.

Maybe you should try to live within your means. If your paying 52% of your income on your mortgage, you're in way over your head.Find a cheaper place to live or pick up another income.

Sell the house and get rid of the dog. And why don't you start working too?
