Are you counting Australia? Why or why not?

Australia is a continent, not an island.

Greenland usually tops the list, although now that it's melting, some say it's actually three islands, not one. So we'll have to see if it maintains its place in years to come:

1. Greenland
2 New Guinea
3 Borneo
4 Madagascar
5 Baffin Island

Wikipedia says, "An island or isle is any piece of land that is completely surrounded by water." That would make Australia an island, but "conventional usage distinguishes between continents and islands, making Greenland the largest island proper."

At the link you'll find a list of the 180 largest islands, in order. The top ten are
1. Greenland
2. New Guinea
3. Borneo
4. Madagasgar
5. Baffin
6. Sumatra
7. Honshu
8. Great Britain
9. Victoria
10. Ellesmere

The others have already answered the main question correctly, so I'll just explain why Australia could not be considered the largest island in the world.

If you are going to include continents like Australia on the list of islands - it would still not be the largest island in the world. ALL the continents are technically islands. Europe/Africa/Asia are all like one big island (they are all connected by land, and surrounded by water on all sides) - that would make it the world's largest island. Next would be North and South America, followed by Antarctica, and finally we get to Australia. So... If you want to include Australia, you also have to include the other continents... so the list would look like this:

1. Eurasia/Africa
2. North/South America
3. Antarctica
4. Australia
5. Greenland

Since this list is pretty much useless, an island is usually assumed to mean any land mass surrounded on all sides by water that is not a continent.

Most Medal of Honor recipients are awarded them posthumously. It's not a medal many people seriously want. Despite the claims of naive and ignorant people who know nothing about what goes on in the Afghanistan, soldiers aren't carrying one rifle in each hand slaughtering men, women and children and receiving medals for doing so. But, I digress. SEALS are trained in wilderness survival. So, of course you'd want option A to be with you in your scenario.
