It has been argued that the NHL is pretty much maxed out at the number of teams the league already has. There really aren't any cities left that would support pro hockey here in the U.S., thus don't look for the NHL to expand anytime soon.

On the other hand, we could very well see one or two or more of the weaker teams either move or get contracted within the next few years.

It's Betten the NHL needs to get rid of. He has all but ruined the NHL completely. Had it not been for him we would no t be having this conversation.

For those of you who said Carolina and Tampa Bay did you forget that they just won Stanley Cups? That's more than I can say for some teams that have been in the league longer and have not won the cup. Tampa Bay is also 3rd in attendance.

Nashville, Tennessee and Columbus, Ohio aren't what I would call great places to have hockey teams. Why put them there?

They gave Minnesota their team back because the Stars moved to Dallas.

Out of all the teams in the most trouble it's St.Louis. They have had the worst attendance in the NHL the past two years and it's getting worse.

this is your attendance avg. for home games this season. Even with teams doing great this season still showing poor attendance.

Atlanta 15,981 Capacity 18 546
Anaheim 15,952 Capacity 17,174
Florida 14,968 Capacity 19 080
Nashville 14,635 Capacity 17 500
Phoenix 14,471 Capacity 17,799

other teams like the Islanders, Devils very poor attendance.and the Devils are building a new arena and have been one of the best teams in the NHL for the past 10 years.

the team I'm really surprised about is the Stanley cup champions the Carolina Hurricanes with an avg. attendance of 17,272 per home game.Capacity 18 700.

even the L.A Kings have been a poor team in the league for many years but they have been around for 40 years and have the fans that still show up to the games if they would get rid of teams in Cali it would be San Jose and Anaheim which are lower in attendance even when they are both having better years then the Kings. the Fans are in L.A not Anaheim and San Jose.

and for T-Bay they have one of the biggest attendence in the NHL for the past few years allot of Canadians live in T-Bay thats why hockey was put there but to put two teams in Florida now that was a very big mistake.
its funny how they say a team couldn't be supported in Ontario cause of the Leafs, well look at Cali with 3 teams and Florida with 2. now does that really make any sence when hockey fans live and die hockey here in Canada.

Tampa Bay 19,825. Capacity 19 758 3rd in attendence behind Montreal Canadiens 1st and the Detroit Red Wings 2nd.

A few years ago Bud Selig threatened to contract two or three baseball teams. Hockey definitely need to rid some of the sun belt teams: Atlanta - hockey already failed there w/the Flames. Tampa Bay & the Florida Panthers will never become hockey hot beds, there is too much other forms of entertainment in those cities. Finally the Carolina Hurricanes. It's a very small market, where most people would rather watch cars lap circles, than experience a real active & exciting sport...

i detect a pair human beings's comments in here particularly hypocritical. Russ, working example, has a Jets avatar yet calls out Ottawa and Edmonton? the two communities are the two greater primary then the hot Jets, are in larger markets, and are far greater shown. staggering bill additionally comes off as very hypocritical. for somebody to recommend shifting Canadian communities because of the fact on their worst years (ending in the backside 5), they lose one or 2 million is ridiculous, particularly on condition that there are quite a few communities in the USA who lost over $20 million final year and one (Phoenix), that's predicted to lose upwards of $40 million this upcoming season. All Canadian communities are greater good then they have ever been. The 4 smaller markets (Ottawa, Winnipeg, Calgary, and Edmonton) are owned by using Melnyk, Thomson, Edwards, and Katz respectively, all billionaires. Even without making the playoffs, and with regards to Edmonton, an old section, all purely lost incredibly minor sums of money (much less then $5 million). the different 3 communities (Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal) are between the NHL's miraculous revenues turbines. for my section, Canada can help an added 2 franchises on miraculous of the seven that already are placed in the rustic. the relax 2 markets which could help communities that are presently without are Quebec city and a 2nd Southern Ontario group. Quebec city is in the physique of strategies of making a clean section and has a skill possession team waiting and prepared to purchase a collection could the possibility upward push up. Southern Ontario isn't almost as arranged yet could be if the NHL signaled a desire to place a 2nd group there.

Move the Kings to San Diego and see if they work there. I wouldn't wish a team like the Kings on Canadians, who know what real hockey is. It makes more sense to move them than to move the Ducks, because Honda Center wouldn't have any tenants, and the Staples Center would still have 3 pro teams (Lakers and Clippers for basketball and the Avengers from Arena Football). Besides, there is no need for 2 teams 27 miles apart, and since the Ducks are the much better team. If the Kings don't work, they can be contracted with no big loss.

I'd like to see at least one of Florida teams eliminated, most likely the Panthers.

Also, the Coyotes need to go back to Winnipeg, instead of being desert dwellers. Maybe if the Coyotes were roller hockey, they'd have more of a following.

I also don't think Dallas deserves a team.

I think the league needs to contract to 28 teams and have 4 divisions.

I think hockey could expand 2-4 more teams but all these teams would be located in Canada where the attendance would be awesome. as far as culling maybe a few, but if these teams would hit more and fight more people would fill the seats.
Hockey needs to get back to the basics and fire the NHL commissioner.

Florida, Tampa Bay, Carolina, and Nashville, I like St.Louis, Dallas, Anaheim, San Jose, Colorado, and Phoenix, they deserve a Hockey Team Instead of Penguins moving from Pittsburgh to KC Why don't the Predators Lightning or Panthers move there, I like the Pens more then I like those Teams.

I think that right now, the cities are fine. People say that nobody in the south Cares about hockey, but that's not true at all. A lot of people around here follow it- It's catching on much more then most would think.

I really couldn't name any place unless I had been there and gotten a feel for what people there thought about thiner team. This is something where you should no ever speak from ignorance. (okay, so that's good advice for anything)

Please get rid of LA. Other then when they had Gretzky does anyone remember them having a franchise? Phoenix is a great one to get rid of as well. Move it BACK to Canada, can't remember which team they were sorry. I'm not sure Columbus is really a hockey town either, but that is theirs to defend. I'd probably get rid of Florida while I am at it. Either that or Tampa Bay, hey let's see if they can support one team in the State before we remove both. In general I am against Southern teams, except the Dallas Stars because I think they have basically shown they belong, but let the city prove if it can or not. I don't know the numbers on most so I can't really say.

I think that every team in the NHL is right where it should be. There is not really any shortage of attendance in any arena. Especially Pittsburgh, they are in the top 10 for teams selling out this year. They had a 6 home game sell-out streak, and the fans in Pittsburgh couldn't be more happy to have the penguins here. I would however like to have had 3-4 more Canadian teams but, no one should be ready to relocate to Canada any time soon.
