It's seems to me that the core question here is about changing customs. Berendoi is religious in nature and how you stand on religion in general might affects how you might act or re-act. Personally I would reduce it to a pro and a con. The ceremony in itself seems delightful, giving God credit for life. The down side is celebrating more births with the instability and stress brought on society by over population. Sociology has been saying forever that stabilizing population would solve so much, almost everything. I would think that research in that area and getting the message out, along with finding ways to reduce population without offending religion or perhaps our nature, is something I can't answer. Maybe voluntary reversible sterilization or something. A few billion there might save a few trillion elswhere.

Cultures have the right to exist, and what one person might call backward or outdated is another person's tradition. For someone to "correct" them is arrogant to say the least.
