For this year, if you are driving, you only need a driver's license and birth certificate. If you travel by any other means you do need a passport.

Go to the Dept. of Transportation website for more info.

The (not so) simple answer is yes and no. If you are traveling by car or cruise ship then you do not need a passport yet, but you do need definite ID. Starting next year you will need a passport.

If you are flying, you DO need a passport. It takes about 8 weeks to get and will cost you around $100. To apply, make sure you have two photos for your passport and your ORIGINAL birth certificate plus another photo ID (driver's license works)

Most of the other answers already listed are correct, but no one mentioned that you have to have your birth certificate and a photo ID. I went to the post office with everything ready to go, it costs $97.00 plus a processing fee of $15.00. You have to have two 2"X2" photos to give them. The requirements for the photos are very specific, so it is best to go get it done somewhere that takes passport photos (some post offices offer this service). I received my passport after 4 weeks.

Now you have to have a passport to go to Mexico. You can apply for Passports at the post office. They cost $97 and take about 2 months to one. Go to the USPS web site and get more info.

yes, since January you must have passport to go anywhere outside the US (including Canada), all you have to do is to go to your local post office and get your passport done if you already don't have it (it usually takes up to 3 weeks to get one)
