The Gibson SG....Shecter does make a few guitars that are good but nothing in league with Gibson guitars

I agree that guitars are a personal preference. However, strictly speaking you need to clarify your question.

If you are comparing an EPIPHONE SG (made for Gibson) and a Schecter then it makes no difference as they are made in the same factory. Do a search for "Sound Professional Guitar". They are one of the largest guitar factories on the planet and make guitars for may companies.

If you are thinking of a TRUE Gibson, then the Gibson is definitely a better instrument.

Guitars are really a personal choice. The guitar you pick is going to be a long-term relationship, so you better make sure you pick the one that YOU feel most comfortable with and like the best.

However, you can never go wrong with a Gibson SG. I personally prefer Fenders, but Gibson has a longstanding tradition of producing quality axes and the SG is a historic axe in and of itself.
