I am currently a video editor and would like to find another job as an editor when i move, but i'm unfamiliar with the production companies in the area. any suggestions ???

Contact your future local film commission office. You can talk with the director there and see if they have a crew list (some state's do) or who you may contact for future editing work.
Also advertise your services on craigslist.com for free. Start out with small projects like weddings, graduations, etc... and your business will eventually spread by word of mouth. Films and TV work don't come up too often - so personal video editing services will keep money in your pocket in between gigs.
