I always get my info by doing web searches. I can tell you, if you have no experience with such things, that there are tons of fakes and made for export/tourist pieces out there. Some go to great lengths to try and fake a patina. Original pieces made for use will have wear marks and oil marks from being worn and most will have at least some minor chips or dings. Examine it closely to see if the same "patina" is present in the damaged areas, because if it is, it's fake. I can't really tell you how to tell if the patina is fake, because it is a feel and a look that one recognizes with experience and having gotten taken a couple of times.
