Of course, the most obvious option is for those who live near areas with old ponds with frog populations.
Assuming this is within your reach, hike on down there with a dip net and bucket, slosh through the water and you'll be sure to net quite a few!
And you'll probably have a pretty fun time doing it too... (Bring galoshes!)

However, since most of the folks writing me with this question don't live anywhere near publicly accessible ponds, my first thought would be to ask at the local pet stores whether they have any contacts for getting some tadpoles.

A very good place to try is looking up "POND SUPPLY" in the local Yellow Pages...very often you will find that they carry or can order tadpoles for you. Remember if you are going to put these in an outdoor pond, be sure to get only native species of frogs!

The other option is to try some of the online reptile and amphibian suppliers

Take a trip out of the city. You can usually find tadpole wherever there are ponds. Take an empty two liter (or smaller) soda bottle with you. Go into the water and submerge the bottle near the tads and the natural suction of water into the bottle will capture enough of them for fun. You can close the cap and not worry about the lack of oxygen for 6-12 hours.

Once home, pour out the tads into a large bowl. Pour some sand or gravel on one side of the bowl and make it a gradual hill so tads can walk out of the water to breath once they develop legs. Shred lettuce into tiny bits to feed the tads.

you can buy a kids kit "tadpole to frog" they will send you the tadpoles, but will only send them out when weather conditions are favorable for the tadpole to arrive alive. We have a landscaping pond and get our tadpoles each spring at the larger garden shops, where they sell aquatic plant life and fish.

When the weather warm up listen for the Frogs. When they drink beer they Burp, we call it a Croak. Go to the ditches and creeks that have water and look for tadpoles swimming around. Take a large Aquarium fish net to catch them and have a plastic bucket with water to put them in. Maybe fill bucket about 1/3 to 1/2 full of the pond water. I never seen them for sale in a pet shop, I guess they may sell them in season.

Tadpoles are usely found in standing water, that are by lake sides, as a kid we would found them in cattle cards, with old standing water, thats how forgs becane! most of them!

any old pond is usually full of them. You'll have to wait till summer though, when it warms up.
