If you say you shall honor mother and father and let the "thy" out of the sentence this then talks to the actual mothers and fathers of the world and that we should honor this task very highly so that we can become "worthy" of our kids honoring us. I do not believe that God could had meant that a child should honor a father who is a lazy drunkard or a mother who is only following her vanities.
To be honored at the first place asks something from the person who wants to be honored and this is to be indeed a good father and a good mother. If we take this commandment in such a sense this would be in correspondence with what you are saying and I truly believe that this commandment is often wrongly interpreted or even wrongly translated.

Try not to take the Ten Commandments too literally. There are a lot of things that aren't listed literally within the Ten Commandments, but virtually every civilized society believes are just plain wrong - rape, arson, etc.
Think of it more as a starting point - the overall message is "be good to each other and do the right thing."

Nope.
Protecting children is usually innate of the parent(s) and therefore is understood. The 10 commandments tend to advise us on situations where one might have the desire to do something other than what we already know to be right.

God doesn't make mistakes. Jesus said the two greatest commandments are to love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind and to love your neighbor as yourself. If you truly love God and your neighbor then how one treats a child is covered.

Because it is already build in any each of us...How stupid to create a laws for that which always been in our hearts...But we are powerful enough to screw it too as anything else...that we are facing more and more in our generation...Never....never human Laws created absence of crime, quite in contrary made crime grown rapidly...Paradox? You speaking of Commandments? Have you ever broke one? Honestly? We are all breaking that time to time in one way or another...once you dishonored parent- you broke it...once you lie you broke it, once you fantasied about your neighbor spouse -you broke it...there is no degree which conditioning Commandments....We have Laws , we have crime, and not vise versa...

Honoring one's parents is what God has in mind for all offspring, and He faithfully promises His reward when we do so (as stated in the Bible), as shown below:
Exodus 20:12
"Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you". This means God's faithfulness is in your life, even with such a difficult command as this. God knows how hard it is to submit to an authority-figure, including imperfect parents. God knows that parents are human beings, and so moms and dads will have their ugly tendency to be selfish, unreasonable, tyrannical, possessive, even deceitful towards their own children. That is why there is another verse mentioned later in the Bible that states children must NOT be provoked by their parents: Ephesians 6:2-4 "'Honor your father and mother"'—which is the first commandment with a promise—that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth. Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord." Please keep in mind the "training and instruction of the Lord" part. If your parents are making you do something that is sinful in the eyes of God, you have every right to say no. That takes a lot of prayer and conviction from the Holy Spirit too. God is first always, and He has every power to override an earthly parent's decision. In addition, honoring one's own parent requires A LOT of a faith in God, knowing that regardless of how that parent (or even another authority figure) acts, God will bless that child if he or she is faithful to His commands. Why do we have to honor our parents? I have thought about this, and prayed about it after a fairly traumatic argument I've had with my parents last year. First, it teaches us how to rely on God and learn how to love others the way God does - unconditionally, no matter how unfair our parents may be. Second, it teaches us self control, humility before God, and eventual conviction in the eyes of our parents. When parents do something wrong to their daughter, for instance, she can either choose to seek some sort of revenge on her mom or dad, or 2) she can pray that the Holy Spirit will teach her to love the way Christ loves, and in turn, ask God to change the hearts of her unreasonable parents. This has happened to me, and is still a struggle, but God has been faithful and is showing me so much progress from last year. Please keep in mind, however, that parents are human beings, and sometimes they will have a hard time admitting they are wrong. My mother, for instance, is as hot-headed as she can ever get, never looking at another person's point of view, and always intimidating me with her criticism and nosiness. I've chosen to maintain a bit of distance with her and give her neutral answers without shouting back, but I've done it with a lot of prayer. It is not easy being a child. It is not easy being a parent. It is definitely not easy being a Christian child of unreasonable parents who are also Christians because you are so tempted to point at them as selfish hypocrites. But nothing is impossible with God's guidance and ultimate love, even the very challenging fifth commandment.

whoever wrote them probably wasn't a baby or child, therefore they would not have personally received any benefit from writing such a rule.
