I have a 98 Taurus Se and rove it from a friends house to the grocery store(10 minute drive) and it ran fine. Came out of the grocery store and the car could barely stay running. It is barely idling....very choppy and well below 1000...normally it idles at almost 2000. I drove it home as best I could...if I would let off the gas it would almost die again...but if I keep giving it gas it stays running somewhat....
What does it sound like is the problem? TPS?

let me reexplain this, it is idling at whats looks to be 100 and normally idles at over a 1000, 2000 is definitely too high...but I would be happier with a too high of an idle than no idle at all, at least it would be running then!!

check for vacuum hoses that are pulled loose from the engine. open your air filter box and make sure it looks ok, and look into the hose going into the engine. the mass air flow sensor is in the hose. make sure there are no leafs or anything blocking it. there is an electrically idle air control motor on top of the engine near where the air intake hose bolts to the throttle body. it is slightly tilted towards the rear of the car. part of it is round shaped like a cylinder. you can try tapping on that. they stick sometimes and need replaced.

Almost sounds as if you have a vacuum leak somewhere. Lots of times the hoses become very brittle over time, and develope a leak. The easiest way of finding it without proper tools at hand, such as a leak detector, would be to use a can of carb cleaner w/the little plastic tube(supplied w/ it), and spray it slowly all around the vacuum hoses. But, be very careful not to get it too near the hot exhaust, or it could cause a fire. Good luck with your situation. It may also be a plugged catalytic converter, if your car has no power at all.

My TTempo did that, and it was a small broken rubber vacuum hose under the hood...look all over the engine, and trace ANY small rubber hoses...first thought here...

btw, your idle should normally be just at 1000, not 2000.

Addendum: I would try looking for the broken vacuum hose first, since it happened EXACTLY as it happened to me, suddenly!!! It may be something else, like a bad idle solenoid, but if it drives normally at speed, it is probably a vacuum lleak...

sounds like a throttle position sensor it can be alot of things but most likely a sensor pull the negative battery cable off ur car for 30 seconds put it back on start your car and dont touch it for 2 mins it should level out if not u need to take it to a dealer

its sounds like a sensor of some sort but then again it could be anything from a crank sensor to a sending unit even to a bad fuel pump even bad coils best advice look in your yellow pages for a ford dealer take it there pay 100.00-50.00 to have it scanned for fault codes good luck
