So, I started writing this book to take place in late 1600s early 1700s France, but Ive found it is really hard to keep all the facts straight about distance and actual places and all that jazz. I was thinking of modifying the book so that the name of the place it occurrs in never actually appears, or i just make up a place.
any ideas?
please help.

As someone who has written with both historical settings and fantasy settings, I've gotta tell you... you have to do your research no matter where/when you set your story. Even if you make the setting up, you're still going to have to be very clear on the lay of the land, on how far apart places are and how long it takes to get there. Every novel I've written has a huge binder full of maps, information on the timeline, events going on at the same time for reference, clothing of the period, food, common social mores, etc.

You're not saving yourself any work at all by making up a place, so just figure out for sure where and when your story belongs, then do the foundation work or it will all fall apart.

%. a state. Do climate learn. Do financial learn. Make up a small city. Its what Stephen King did. Jerusalem's Lot, Derry, fort Rock and so on. do no longer certainly exist, they're in accordance with cities the place he lived. certainly that's what fairly some writers do. replace names and a few factors of geography to guard city/city and so on.

I think you should ask yourself if it is truly important that your story be set in that time and place. If the plot is strong, more than likely it can be set in any time or place. You should choose a setting that you know or select one that you would enjoy researching.
