It was probably a sediment of some sort. Where it came from probably depends on what kind of water system you have. If you're on a municipal system, they could have been working on the pipes, and dislodged some sediment. On the system where I work, the dept. that maintains it periodically puts dynamite down the wells to loosen scale and deposits. The water runs a rusty brown color those days.

If you're on a well, it is still probably sediment. It comes up from the well with the water, and collects somewhere in the pipes. A bump or a jar, or just water hammering when the washer or dishwasher kicks on and off can dislodge it.

You can prevent it by putting in a whole house filter. I did that in my last house, and it worked great. I had to change the filter about every other month or so, as the sediment that it trapped got to be enough that the water pressure started to drop. Changing the filter was easy, though, and any plumber or someone who can sweat copper joints should be able to put one in easily. Check at a home improvement store or hardware store to find one. Look for a popular model that has a ready supply of filters, though, 'cause over time, you'll spend a lot more on filters than you will on the housing.

not utilising the plumbing gadget sufficient to allow oxygen in and corrode. Draw water in the course of the line and watch for it till the water will become sparkling. Then fill your bathtub. Use caution earlier eating.

What everyone else has already said. If you live in a house, you should also check your water lines. It is possible it could be broken. Just walk around the yard and you'll know when you step in real moist spot.

You have galvanized pipes and it's been rusted. So when you have'nt turned on the tub water for a while, rusty water comes out. Don't drink your water, please.
