It's seratonin "the feel good" chemical in the brain. The act of giving an unconditional show of affection (of course, ONLY if there is NO problem doing so,ie NO sexual harrassment etc involved) is something most humans and especially babies need. Most like the "bonding".

Hugging is a feeling of love and safety. We felt that in our mothers wombs When we hug it is more sincere and personal than a hanadshake. Hugs are a clossness, we all need to feel.
There is a saying the "the distance can be measured by the arms length." It is great for the arm to be near. Have you had a hug today? We need several everyday. They help children grown up secure aand do better in school. They also help prevent suicide among teenagers. The elderly have no one around and long for a hug. A hug is the best gift you can give.

Not just hugging but touch is very important. Babies fail to thrive if left un touched except for the basic diaper changes etc. Seniors as well tend to fade away when in nursing homes and not given touch in a positive light. A simple touch or a hug is needed for all living creatures both human and pets.
