It won't pump water into the house. It feels very hot. The big tank is full, but we;re getting no water into the house. What could be wrong? If we need a new pump how much do they cost and can it be installed by us?

If it's running and it's hot... and it's not pumping water... turn it off immediately. It's probably shot and needs to be replaced, but there is a chance that it's okay and there's just something blocking your inlet or the supply line.

Remove the pump and blow compressed air through your supply line to make sure it's not blocked. If the line is okay, you'll want to replace the pump. It shouldn't be very difficult to replace. Just open up your well and take a look at it, I'm sure you'll find that it's a pretty simple procedure. I would recommend removing your old pump and taking it with you to a hardware store to find a comparable replacement.

You can expect the cost to be somewhere between $150 to $500... depending on the size and type of pump you buy.

There are a couple of possibilities. First off, if the pump is running hot, but still running, I'd suspect an air blockage in it somewhere. Is there a bleed valve on it? if you crack the bleed valve you should hear air "hissing" out before you see some water coming out. (I'd suspect this first if the large tank is already full.) Another possibility is that you've got a frozen line somewhere. Do your lines run under/outside your house? Are you in an area that's subject to freezing temperatures?
As for the cost of a new pump, they can run anywhere from a couple of hundred dollars to several hundred depending on the type and size you need.
Replacing it should be something you can do yourself if you're handy, but be very careful when working around electricity.

You are pumping air and that is why the pump is hot. Shut it down until you get water to the pump. Maybe you got a blockage somewhere in the feeder line. See if you got the water right to the pump. You may have to prime the system, which means pouring water down the outlet side of the pump so it will seal up and then start pushing back the water you just gave it. Other water will follow.

It sounds like it is stuffed. You need to get someone to check it out. LOL I asked my partner who works with an irrigation firm and he said you do need to get it checked out, it could be a simple thing that could be fixed, you may not need to get a new one.
