I the eighties, there were the “Big Eight” accounting firms: Arthur Andersen, Coopers and Lybrand, Deloitte Haskins and Sells, Ernst and Whinney, Peat Marwick Mitchell, Price Waterhouse, Touche Ross, and Arthur Young. Now we’re down to the “Final Four”.

Is there a Group B accounting firm that might jump up to assume a role in the top tier?

The gap between the Big 4 and the rest is quite huge still. There is probably only one that is even close to threatening the Big 4.

Grant Thornton

Next up is BDO Seidman, which is about half the size of GT. Then you have others like McGladrey & Pullen.
