Well, his former chief of staff is a lobbyist for Merck, the company that makes the drug. Perry also got $6,000 from Merck's political action committee during his re-election campaign. Merck is working to get state laws passed across the country mandating Gardasil, which could be worth millions if that happens. Merck doubled its lobbying budget in Texas and has funneled money through Women in Government, a group that includes Perry's current chief of staff's mother-in-law.

Most doctors are against the mandate because the drug is still so new. In addition, Merck is the same company that had to take Vioxx off the market, so such caution is not unwarranted.

On the surface our Governor looks like a concerned humanitarian, however I get a sneaky feeling that the large drug company ( I think it's Merk or Pfizer) producing the new vaccine gets prime dollar for the first 7 years, in order to recoup research costs. Rick Perry is also preparing to leave office...I wonder if he might have something lined up in another field....say, pharmaceuticals? It would have been nice if we discussed this issue before he issued an executive order from Austin.

lIt's the double edge sword for Mr. Perfect Hair. The dispenser of this drug will be his buddy, the pharmaceutical giant, Merck. Old Rick gets a nod for being a caring Governor and will get enormous kick backs from one of the biggest pharmaceuticals in the country.... we are talking millions here. Take a look at Rick's previous stands on education of any kind.... he could have been least interested. When asked if teachers' heath care was important, his answer was " I don't think that is something truly dedicated teachers think about." Yeah, right... like teachers arec too stupid to worry about their own health care and the health care of their families. This governor is no friend to education in any way unless it will line his pockets... and this most certainly will !!!

to prevent cervical cancer, its progressive and smart. unfortunately we can't depend on the parents of America to vacinate their own daughters from a deadly cancer becasue of their own narrow mindedness. You know the government also mandated that all milk have folic acid because once again the American people couldn't be trusted with taking in this vital nutrient to help prevent birth defects. Thank heaven, goodness, whatever for leaders like that!

I think that he's totally out of line. It's a glaring example of the power TENS OF THOUSANDS of highly-paid industry lobbyists in this country have over our politicians' votes and therefore our lives.

Idealists, environmentalists, health care reformers, etc. volunteer or work for low pay. It's always an uphill battle against/or to reach compromise with business interests $$$ to influence our elected officials who represent us.

Every household should have the name, address, phone # and e-mail of their local, state and federal representatives taped up somewhere. It's often in the newspaper, available at the library, or call the League of Women Voters. 5 minutes to communicate ONE SENTENCE does it. It makes SOME difference. I've gotten form letters back, so they do take note how opinion is running among the constituency. Whether they do anything about it or not..........there's always next election to boot them out. Hopefully.

A> religious fundamentalists want to block the vaccine that may prevent cancer

B> He has a business relationship with the manufacturer of the drug.

I say it's a little of both.

Two reasons I can think of.
1. The pharmaceutical company that developed and patented the drug is a big cash doner to him and his party.

2. It will save many from cervical cancer.

this will be the one of the most life saving inventions in many years. Cervical cancer really is not that fun to get, and the actual treatment is rather brutal. it is also a disease of young woman so it is even more tragic when it occurs.

I think it would be better to start this out on a volunteer
basis, but you know how it is when there's money to be made.
I want to know what happens when the parents can't afford it.
I heard it's about $150 a vaccine & you have to get it 3 times.
