my dell inspiron 5160 usb ports were working just fine til I installed my friends ipod shuffle(that mini belt clip thing) on it, and even that doesn't work right. Now, my usb ports don't recognize anything. anyone has had this problem and knows how to fix it let me know. I've flashed my BIOS, and reinstalled the drivers for the usb ports.. but nothing.. any help would be great!

well, I think the ports are still active, when I plug my non-ipod mp3 into the port it will charge it, but won't recognize it like it used to, to where I could actually put songs on it, also my camera won't work and my psp won't work on it either.

You can disable ports in the bios so maybe you accidently did something there. If you have been poking around in the bios lately check there first.

Static electricity can kill USB's. You may also have killed the 5volt supply that they carry, and most USB peripherals require.

Use the device manager in your system control panel and see if the USB Root Hub has an error condition associated with it.

Go to the Dell site and download your chipset drivers and re-install them, otherwise.... you will need to get your motherboard repaired or get a CardBuss card that has a USB hub interface on it.
