I watched an old tv show a few years ago. During that time, they aired a commercial that was set back to the 30s/40s. I think it was a true cigarette comercial from way back when. Could they ever air a commercial that sold cigarettes now-a-days?

Only anti-cigarette commercials...Nowadays in a comercial (cigarettes or beer), the sponser cannot show people smoking or drinking at all. The drug may be present, but not put to use. Note that next time you watch a sports game.

No it is illegal now In the United states In April 1970, Congress passed a law banning the advertising of tobacco products on television and radio starting on January 2, 1971. [10] The Virginia Slims brand was in the last commercial shown. Smokeless tobacco ads, on the other hand, remained on the air until 1986.
