I'm just curious who else goes to anime conventions and if so which ones?
My absolute favorite is Nekocon in Hampton, VA but I also like Anime Mid-Atlantic. Katsucon has gone downhill in the past few years and Otakon is too big for me. I want to go to Anime Expo and SakuraCon

So far the anime conventions that I have gone to are SakuraCon (Cause I live in WA) and Anime Expo (Travel To it)
I Like both. Mainly because I love anime conventions in general but it's also nice with size different in getting a difference in atmosphere. SakuraCon well has been growing in attendance but isn't as big as Anime Expo. So, it's less of a crowd then if you were going to the giant ones, but has decent events such as music events and cosplay and such. I think overall if you were someone who would like to avoid the larger ones, but still want good events and such SakuraCon is good for that.
Anime Expo on the other hand, is the largest anime convention in the United States. I think even if you don't like the bigger ones, I think it's worth the trip to go there and the experience. I'll admit there are long lines for things and you have to wait but if you come with a friend it isn't bad and because there is sooo much things going on, if you decide you don't want to wait in line for something you can do something else. Their events are really good and worth attending, their dealers room is HUGE so you can spluge your money on vast amounts of anime stuff you'd probably find no where else, and the cosplay is great, there is so much of it. Plus it's located like right next to disney land that if you feel too overwhelmed by the expo or have extra time you could go there. You can get decent rates on hotels that are few blocks from the place and have an enjoyable stay.
Unfortunatly there are the only two that i've been too but I think both are pretty good. I hope to go to Otakon one day although I think Anime Expo probably will last in my mind as best convention I've gone to.

I go to several small time cons in the Los Angeles area, but for the end all and be all to anime cons, you can't beat Anime Expo.

When I was in Texas I went to A-Kon... mostly anime, but had guests from other genres as well. Great if you are a fan of ADV Films since they are based out of Texas and they have a lot of their voice actors show up for A-Kon.
