Cat's in the Cradle," appearing on the 1974 album Verities & Balderdash, is a song by American singer/songwriter Harry Chapin.
The song is told in first person, that of a father who is too busy to spend time with his son. As the son grows older, he admires his father and wants to grow up in his image.

After the son becomes a man, the father is eager to spend time with him, to make up for lost time. However, the son now claims that he is too busy with his own work and family to spend time with his father.

Sadly, the father discovers that his son has grown up to be just like him. Just like him in the sense that the father didn't want to make time for his son, and so his son is doing the same to his father.

The song was written by Harry's wife Sandy, a poet and writer, long before the birth of their son Joshua. When Sandy showed it to Harry, he had only casual interest. After Joshua's birth, Harry realized just how much the song meant to him and, after reworking the song, eventually recorded it. The song became the best known of Harry's work and a staple for folk rock music.
The song was used as the music bed for a Northern Ireland Office anti-terrorism advertising campaign in the late 1980s.
I love this song.
Hope this helps..

Written and recorded by Harry Chapin in 1973-74. His music was wonderful and he is greatly missed. Taxi is another moving song about a couple who has broken up and meets years later. His music was great.
