The actual machine is fairly simple. I have used my wife's machine several times for simple mending chores. Just follow the instructions that come with the machine. Setting the thread tension takes a bit of practice to avoid stitches that pucker the fabric or fail to draw the seam together properly.
Since the machine can place stitches more rapidly than I can accurately position the material, I sew just an inch or so at a time and set the foot control to limit the top speed of stitching.
Sewing simple cotton fabrics of medium weight is easiest. Thin materials and stretch fabrics can be more difficult.

It is very easy to use. Usually there is a pedal that you use with your foot to control speed (just like the gas pedal in a car) and you use your hands to guide the fabric. The trickiest part for beginners is threading the needle, but there is often a diagram showing how to do it. And the manual will tell you how to do everything else. You should really read the manual as your first resource on how to use the machine, because every brand is different.

I started sewing at the age of 10! I find it fun and rewarding. I like to make my own clothes. People always comment on how they love my creations! I takes a lot of patience, with yourself, to become good at it. But I have sewn so long that my biggest reward was making my daughters prom and wedding dresses. Start out with See & Sew patterns. Simplicity patterns are easiest. Stay away from Vogue--they are too hard for beginners. But get started and you're hooked! Good luck.

Go to www.eHow .com It's pretty easy once you learn how to thread the machine. It's a bajillion times easier than hand sewing.
