I've heard there are a lot of handheld or tiny tabletop sewing machines...Just wondering which is best, cheapest and actually works. Need something to make hawaiian shirts and scrubs with but don't have a lot of space

I would go to wal-mart and get a regular machine. My friend was using one of the hand helds and decided to get a regular machine because it sucked!

I got a Brother from wal-mart for $125, it has 25 stitches including a button hole stitch. If you are planning on making clothes your best bet would be to get a machine like this.

Don't buy one of those little "handy sew" machines for $30.
I have bought those before and they are useless, The thread tension cannot be fixed and it tangles all the time. It also can't punch through more then 2 layers of cloth- and when you put in a hem- it can be up to 3-4 layers of cloth.

You can buy a Brother or Singer for $90-$100. Cheapest- and they will do your shirts no problem.
They can used on your kitchen table and are no more then 1 1/2 feet by 2 feet at the very very most.

Walmart sells them- but some walmarts are shutting down their sewing sections

Hawaiian shirts and scrubs are some of the most easiest patterns, so even with no sewing experience, it is do-able.

I have seen the price of scrubs, and I can see why you want to make them.

You may be surprised to find that A LOT of people sew their own scrubs- so much that you will find quite a selection of cloth that is made for scrubs. (little flying stethoscopes, cats and dogs, babies - for every occupation that needs scrubs)

Basically for Hawaiian shirts and scrubs you'd probably need at least a straight stitch and a zig zag. If you're going to put buttons in an automatic button hole attachment could be useful.

I don't know if the basic Brother machines have the button holer but they are pretty good machines for learning to sew. I also like my Kenmore and I know Sears carries some lesser models than mine. If you really want some in depth reviews you can try here:

I bought one of the $29 SewPro's and it really was junk. So later I found a Singer Featherweight, and it is an outstanding machine. Very small and light. It was around $150.
