..... but footballers are allowed to hold the hands of little children as they go on to the pitch and pat them on the head and back?

It's not about physical contact. You can't treat an injury (no matter how small) unless you are a qualified first-aider or medical-type.

This is yet another example of political correctness gone horribly wrong. If you treated everyone equally with respect and love (as we all should) then you wouldn't need "political correctness" and a child with a sore knee could get a plaster. Seriously people, political correctness has spun way out of control and become a joke.

This is a health and safety issue. The recommended procedure is that the teacher/assistant prepares the plaster and invites the child to apply it themselves. The idea is that unqualified persons should not be encouraged to administer medical assistance in case of causing further harm. Most schools have in place a designated person(s) with the relevant first aid accreditation, whose assistance should be summoned in the event of a serious health issue arising. Would you be happy with the teacher handing out a paracetamol tablet to a child complaining of a headache? Obviously in extreme circumstances eg choking, severe arterial bleeding you would act and the authorities and parents would approve of your actions.

Because there is a 0.0003% chance the teacher may rape the child for putting a plaster on his or her knee.
Footballers who knows.
