If you commit suicide, you'll be buried in a grave.
If you attempt suicide, the government probably won't do anything, but your family and friends will probably try to make you get help.

If you commit suicide, you will be 6 feet under locked in a box...not a madhouse. If you attempt and fail, then you might be encouraged to spend some time in a mental health facility

I actually do think that it is illegal to commit suicide.
NO one obviously gets charged for it.
Unfortunately what people fail to realize is that your death DOES affect others.
Someone loves you
you have a mother, spouse friend or neighbor that cares.
You would be locked away for two reasons
1. That you are not very good at killing yourself if you failed to do so
2. you must be protected from yourself!
People get rights taken from them when they cannot function inside of the law.
If they lock you up they are trying to help you
to feel better or at least that is the intention.
Most suicides are the result of mental pain of some sort
there is help
call the suicide hotline and talk to them
dont choose a permant solution to a temporary problem

If you commit suicide, then they are only going to bury you or burn you - you are dead, so prison would be pretty redundant.
Now, if you attempt suicide, and fail, then I don't think that the government has any right to do anything to you. You are right - it is your life, and you have the right to end it or not (In my opinion - not the law). But I think this should only apply if you harm just yourself. If you hurt anyone else (crash into another car, for example. . .), then I think that you should be penalized to the fullest extent of the law.
Personally, I think that suicide is a very cowardly act, and that if you are so petty as to think of only yourself and no one else, then you don't deserve to live. There are people that care, and people that will help, if you just reach out. But being selfish is nothing but cowardly.

I had a brother try and commit suicide. It was so so awful. Everyone blamed themselves. All his friends, family anyone who knew him. So sad for all.
What if tomorrow is better than today? What if the pain would ease later. Wouldn't it benefit you to wait and see?
Once I was very depressed. I had a sick child diagnosed with a life long illness. I had post pardom depression, my dad died and I didn't want this life I had. I am a Christian I didn't want to kill myself. But death seemed the only answer. I prayed out to God to take me. To allow me to die. I heard a voice loud and clear say to me, "But I have great plans for you" I was driving and almost wrecked the car.
God is real, he is there and he loves you.
Seek him , knock and the door will be opened. He will accept you just as you are. You don't need to change to go to him. No matter what someone may tell you. God can change you later if he wants.
I just prayed for you, I care and so do others!
God bless you dear,
†

Yes if you try to commit suicide the police will call the hospital and they will send you to the mad house for 72 hours for evaluation. If you prove to be sane they have to let you go. To the government that is not oppression, because rational people don't want to die. Do you remember the doctor who assisted terminally ill people with their deaths. Even though the people were going to die anyway he was locked up for years because it is against the law. I really hope you don't want to die. What ever is going on in your life is not going to last forever. Things will get better. please believe me.

Yes, if you are deemed to be suicidal, you can be put in a mental institution involuntarily and will be kept there for a MINIMUM of ten days for observation.
