In most cases, no. A defective DVD player can scratch the surface upon loading or while spinning unbalanced. Other than that some DVD's are vulnerable to something that has been coined as "laser rot" back from the laserdisc days. This is usually uncommon with modern DVD processes, but the repeated transitions between heat and cool temperatures like when a DVD is played and taken out of the player can exacerbate the delamination process. Hi Nikki,

No, a DVD player won't hurt a DVD. Nothing touches the recorded surface during playback except a light beam.

They don't wear out.

Now people with sticky fingers can damage a DVD. And mishandling can scratch them.
