I need a great beginner's cookbook for my boyfriend, who knows nothing about nutrition or cooking. Does anyone know of one?

First of all, we don't live together. I'm trying to get him to cook at home/prepare veggies and all that, and stop going out and binging on fast food whenever he's hungry! (He doesn't even keep food at home right now.) Now don't get me wrong -- I'm not pushing the idea on him; it was his. But he really has no idea where to start, and until I find him some good info, I know it's gonna be Carl's Jr. for him every day!

What I'm looking for specifically is something that will be realistic for a GUY who's never cooked before, who doesn't really care or want to spend a lot of time or effort on food preparation. Something that he'll actually use, that starts with the basics, and is healthy.

Thanks soooo much! :D

I have always been partial to the Better Homes and Gardens Cook Book. I got one for graduation from HS (many , many years ago) and am still using it. Simple ingredients and simple instructions. Just my opinion.

The greatest cookbook ever is the Fannie Farmer Cookbook..its an old school cookbook that walks you right through everything including measurements even tools he may need in the kitchen...it even tells you how certain meats must be prepared..this is a must have cookbook and has been around since the 1918...also something you could show him is in the grocery store he can buy some really tasty already cooked organic meals..because if he keeps eating out he will in essence really do damage to the inside of his body as well as the outside..good luck

MA: Death Magnetic was not a very good album at all. It could never beat Master of Puppets or And Justice For All. Only a few good songs on the whole damn thing. Nothing like the stuff they made in the 80's... Anyways, if you're a cow, shouldn't you be thinking about ditching the farm or ways to try to kill the farmer or going on a quest to find the source of strawberry milk? Isn't that what all cows do? I don't know...I read half the thing and it seems like that whole middle school drama crap. I could give you a long, thought out, sympathetic answer but I will probably end up breaking your heart in the end, and I care enough to keep your heart intact, so I won't do that. If she likes you she'll ask you out. If she doesn't than she won't. If she flirts with you in class then she likes you. If you sit down next to her and she gets out of the seat then she doesn't. Simple as that. Just relax and do your homework and eat healthy. It'll all be over by next week.

Maybe you could start one for him,. Find out what kind of foods he likes. If he fries food, use canola oil. Eating at home is the better choise, of course, but if he has too really eat out , their are things to choose from, if he doesn't eat out, he could save on money .Anything roasted, like chicken, no skin, veggies, etc. You don't say why you are worried, Is he over weight, or you are just concerend about his health? That's a good thing. Try cooking for him some time, and get a feed back.I wish the best for you both.

Find a cookbook for one-dish meals. This is easier for a guy to understand, because you cook everything in one pan/pot. The dishes aren't too bad either. The guy will learn more and more about cooking from his own experience, and one day will decide to do something that needs two pots (like spaghetti), and then bake something (lasagna), then get more confident and there won't be anything he's afraid to cook.

I used to be the same way, when i was hungry went straight to fast food. You can try and get him some voila--its easy set the burner to high and put it in there for 5 minutes, its got vegtables meat and noodles in it,and smells good the whole time you cook it.Now I find home cooked meals make me feel so much better than just stuffing my face with grease and eventually he should want to learn to cook more like real eggs taste WAY better than mcdaonalds crap.Anyway hope this helps.

Dear Melon Rose .....

It might be easier to push a 6 ft snowball up a hill than try to get your guy to embrace food preparation your way.

Actually, your ideas about nutrition are good, but if your guy is not already enthused about food preparation, your instructions will probably hasten the day that you two break up.

I don't have a ready answer for this, but I do hope that he sees the value of good nutrition.

But you might have to make peace with the idea that even if he embraces good nutrition, he may not be willing to be the kitchen type of guy that you hope for.

Hope this helps.

I got a fun cookbook for my birthday when I moved to my apartment. It's called

"A man a can a microwave"

Gives 50 tasty dishes you can make with the above tools:) I found it funny and very helpful so I didn't have to eat peanut butter and jelly every day

Betty Crocker cookbooks are nice. Also, if you go to Wal-Mart there are little mini cookbooks up by the register, and they have great recipes in them. Good Luck!
