what i usually do is line my eye [top and bottom] with black eye liner pencil. i don't do it too thin of a line though. then i smudge with my finger until it's nice and blended and smooth all around. i like to add eye shadow and i believe they have "smokey" colors or grey colors that would be great. i love using purple. i do a light purple all on my eyelid. then i use a darker purple on top, but closer to the eyelashes. does this make sense? blue is also a beautiful color. these are both dark enough to give the smokey look. THEN i go over my eyeliner again with the black eye liner pencil to make it even darker. [thinner lines this time.] i believe mascara will help darken the lashes, but i don't use it and it seems fine.
try revlon color stay eye liner pencil. the color is great and it reeeeally lasts. however, i find that it's kinda smudge-free, and i love smudging the liner on the bottom part of my eye for a "smokier" effect. just keep playing around and seeing what you like best. i hope this helped and made sense. oh, and q-tips are great smudgers.
one more thing. i recently tried revlon's bedroom eyes in a sapphire blue color. it's a powder eye liner. that plus a q-tip = great smokiness. just smudge that around, line it at the end with black eyeliner to really make it pop. problem is, it does smudge as the day wears on and lose some of its color, and when i put it on, some powder falls onto my cheeks. and THAT has to be cleaned which is a bit of a hassle.
good luck and have fun! think of painting!

The key to the smokey eye look is blending so it doesn't look too harsh. Blend in a dark brown or black eyeshadow with a 'good' brush from your lashline to your browbone. Just a little amount and then add a little more, the colour looks better and lasts longer if you do that rather than put loads on first. Apply a highlighter or light gold/silver shimmery eyeshadow from your browbone to your eyebrow. For lining your eyes, use either a brown or black kohl pencil. Bring it from the outside corner of your eyes in to the inside. Line underneath also as close to the lashline as possible with a cotton bud, smudge the liner around your eyes, this gives the eyes a softer, smouldering look. go over the liner on top and bottom with your eyeshadow again. and then line on the inside with the kohl pencil. To make your eyes look wide awake, apply a bit of white eyeshadow to the inside corner of your eyes with a brush. Curl your eyeshes, heat the eyelash curlers under your hairdryer or warm water first, they will give a better curl then. Go over your lashes with mascara, bring the brush from side to side on your lash line and bring the wand up in a circular motion. give a second coat when the first dries to make your lashes appear thicker. do your bottom lashes aswell if you like. and voila... eat your heart out Paris!
