The comet was called Hale-Bopp after the two discoverers. It broke up around Jupiter and hit the planet causing huge fireballs. The fireballs were imaged by astronomers' telescopes, like the Hubble telescope, and could even be seen in amateur telescopes. It left dark spots on Jupiter for months afterwards, some bigger than the earth!

The comet Hale-Bopp was named after its two discoverers, and was visible in the western night sky from North America for several weeks in late 1996 and early 1997. It will be back.

THAT WAS NOT the comet that hit Jupiter. That answer was wrong. The dramatic hit on Jupiter was by comet Shumaker-Levy, several years earlier.

For more information about those two comets, look them up by name on the internet or in the library.
