It's called money - I am very certain that Papa John's paid a pretty penny for advertising with the team, in return, they get promotional tickets. People want to go to a game, hey, free ticket, call Papa Johns. Family gets 1 ticket, but needs 3 more so they go to the game and buy 3 tickets. Papa Johns just made money from the pizza sell, the team just sold 3 tickets, and the cost of the free one is eaten up in the advertising revenue. While Hockey is a sport, it is also a business, someone has to pay the players, and about 1,000 + other people to work the games and their office. It is BIG BUSINESS.
And as for the number of fans in attendance, it is 13,900+/game. This is no small number - that average over the span of 15 games is well over 200,000 people filling the stands in support of their team. Stats are showing them at 75% attendance, that's not too bad. Even still, every team has a lull, for some it is what makes a franchise go under. I went to a Dallas Cowboys game one year that it didn't look like there were 100 fans in the stands - seemed like a joke, must really have been hard on the players to travel to packed stadiums and come home to empty stands. Within 5 yrs, they had won 3 back to back superbowls - they didn' seem like such a joke after all.
The Papa John's commercial is just that, a commercial for Papa John's, partnered with the Caps, they (PJ's) have put revenue into the team for the tickets. The team is not just giving away the tickets. However, any advertising that fills the stands, and creates revenue for all concerned is good business practice, not a "joke"

Lol, Sabres sell out 18.8k seats this whole season, all sell outs all at home. Plus, Ovechkin is over rated. Crosby is way better. And btw, 2 great young players? All I see is Ovechkin, maybe they are saying Semin as one, but 1.) His name is Semin lmao, and 2.) He isn't that great. But oh well, the NHL is getting worse, and the Caps announcer part.. what do you expect, they never make the playoffs, so he doesn't know how to announce.

Please, ALL the teams have some form of advertisement going on. The Cannucks have free prizes if the team scores so many goals. They announce that if they score during the power play so and so wins. They all do it. You only hear it when it's a team you don't like. Pay attention. Know what you are talking about.

it's just a promotional scheme to get more fans to a hockey game... I really don't see the problem, teams do it all the time. Pack the house night... various themed nights that go towards charities...
I really don't understand what you're point is.
