Heres some points to consider.
* Its good for the environment. When fuel costs go up, fuel consumption goes down.
* It hastens the retirement of older, less efficient and more polluting vehicles.
* It promotes the use of smaller vehicles. In America today, the main vehicle of choice appears to be the gas guzzling SUV. When fuel prices start to go up, it will force the manufacturers to either improve the efficiency of these vehicles, or encourage the consumer to switch to a smaller vehicle. It worked for me. I have retired my old gas guzzler and bought a smaller, moer efficient vehicle.
* It promotes research into alternative fuels. LPG, hydrogen and hybrid technolgogies will be looked at more seriously as an alternative to gasoline.
The days of cheap gasoline are numbered. It is only a matter of time before mankind will be forced to consider alternatives.

I not sure there is a good answer for this, but price is determined by demand and the oil companies abuse this. But the only positive I can see it opens the doors of innovation to develop alternative fuels as the price of gas rises. Personally I think if we can put a man on the moon in one generation, it can be done we have been on gasoline for a hundred years. Surely somebody can develop a fuel that is less polluting,by burning cleaner. I personally believe that gasoline will fall to the wayside as the dinosaurs did.

Look, the big oil company's recently bought up many metric ton's of corn to drive up the price of corn so ethanol's price would be driven up to keep it less competitive with gas! So you all think that this country really wants to be free from oil? You had better think again! So you think making the poor walk and you ride is fair? You arrogant pri*k! Lets make you walk and see how you like walking when its freezing outside. That's right! I have a heart for people and an anger for the greedy of this world! So you want to know how it will effect America for the better do you? For one it does put more money into the hands of the oil company's and OPEC but if you think that the oil company's are going to pay higher taxes your out of your tree! Right now in America every person that has the money is putting their money in off shore accounts so they won't have to pay American taxes and that puts the burden of paying for everything out of the little peoples pockets, isn't that right Leona Helmsley or has everyone forgotten about what she said some time back? The high price of gas will cost us more but it will also force us to look else where for a solution for travel but if it doesn't give a profit to the rich then it won't be developed and it won't be used! So there you go, the high price of gas isn't going to benefit the general public at all!!!

No matter what, the high cost of gas creates jobs. Lots of jobs.
The oil wells, the refineries, even the distributors and retailers, all benefit from high oil prices. And this money flows all over the world, making life better for millions of people, all involved big and small in the oil industry. IF oil was cheap regulated, they would not sell oil to the US, it would go somewhere else.

I guess it causes increased drilling for oil and that creates more high paying oilfield jobs. That is one way it is good. I honestly hate having to pay higher prices though, so due to the fact that you stated you HAD to give a positive that was the only one I could think of.

The higher the price the less the average consumer will drive, which will mean less pollution and the spotted owl will live happily ever after as a result.

I don't feel it can benefit anyone. I hope that we (americans) can realize that anything can change at any given time. Maybe we can somehow understand that we are very wasteful and start being more responsible on a self-by-self basis. And start walking!!

the rationale is basically higher prices will drive down demand... meaning folks won't drive as much, reducing pollution. it would also incentivize alternative energy solutions- which would then seem cheaper by comparison.
