I think that if you're perception of 'the best' player means
someone that played with all his heart, played to win,
tried his hardest, and actually delivered what was expected of him,
then the Babe's got to be the best for his time.
I also think that there are much better players today.
Pitches are faster, rules & requirements are stricter, and you need to be disciplined to be at your best in today's game. I don't think he would measure up if he were playing in this century.

Babe Ruth definitely has amazing stats to look back on. But you have the think about the era in which he played. He faced 70 MPH fastball and even slower curveballs. The slider wasn't invented yet. The knuckleball wasn't invented. There wasn't an array of races playing, only white guys. The different races would've made it more competitive and the conditioning for baseball wasn't even a speck as strict as it is now. He was WAY above the rest of the players he played with, but Babe Ruth would've been a decent hitter at best now-a-days.

[Note: I like the Babe and I am a white male so I'm not trying to put either down.]

He was the best baseball player ever. Not only was he an amazing hitter but he was a terrific pitcher too. Before Ruth entered baseball, batters didn't swing for the fences but went after singles, walks, doubles and triples to score runs. I believe Ty Cobb led the majors in home runs just before Ruth arrived on the scene with something like 11 of them. Base Ruth changed the way the game is played for the better.

Babe Ruth dominated the game unlike anyone ever has, but I do not think you could call him the best ever as times and the game has evolved. In terms of all around play, you would have to look at Mays and Bonds (disregarding the steriods) although I believe that by the end of his career we will be saying A-Rod. As much as people hate him, you can't ignore the numbers he puts up, and like Peyton he will be validated once he wins the big one.

He is the greatest player ever. He was the first player to hit 60 home runs in a season and the first to hit 700 home runs in a career. He would still be the all time leader in home runs in Aaron didn't have 1000 more at bats than Ruth as well as if Bonds hadn't taken steroids. He also has a .342 career batting average and 2,217 career RBI's. He played and won a Championship with the 1927 Yankees who are arguably, the best baseball team ever. So, he is the greatest to ever play the game.

Before being the most dominant offensive player of his time he was one of the most dominant pitchers of his time. How many 20 win seasons did Barry Bonds pitch? Without a doubt, the Great Bambino is unrivaled as the best baseball player of all time. Baseball is of all sports the most timeless and is based on natural ability. He was the best then and would be the best today.

No one has come close to doing what Ty Cobb has done in baseball. Alright he was the game's most psychotic he was it's best. He's in the top 5 of 6 offensive stats all-time.

Babe could have been a lot more special had he behaved better and took care of himself a lot better than what he did.

George Herman Ruth was certainly one of the best to ever play the game, I personally think that Willie Mays was the greatest player ever.
