I have about $900 to spend and I'm also going to need to get a printer with that money. I have looked at a lot of different ones, but I have no idea about what's good and what isn't. I'm a high school student who has to write a lot of long papers and do a lot of research. I will have the laptop on for long periods of time, and I don't know if that affects anything or not, I'm just mentioning it.

My advice to you is to save your money. When your looking to get a laptop your probably going to want to spend at least 1100 or more on the laptop alone. Some specs to look at for a good computer are processor speed 1.7GHz or above, processor class core duo, intel centrino duo, hard drive 100GB or above and probably the most important RAM 2GB. If you get computer with most of these specs you'll probably do ok. But like i said before i recommened to wait, the more you wait the better your comptuer will be. And also when you enter into college you want that investment to last as long as possible.

it all depends on what you are doing to use the laptop for...but it is always best to customiz your computers because they are cheaper that way and you can get exactly what you want.
