Brits make good movies--perceptive character studies. The British comedian Benny Hill was always eagerly viewed here by many Americans. His half hour comedy was a riot.
What else? Many contributions & inventions in science...physics, chemistry, aviation, & NAVIGATION.
The list goes on....Great food, especially those beef recipes.

Grt Brtn also played a MAJOR part in bringing an end to WW2 with it's well-trained military & very patriotic people..

Bloody hell is actually harmless compared to the way most Americans rant & rave. Americans have destroyed English here. Just look on Y/A cultures and groups-you'll read it all.

Tally-ho.

PS-- the English language.

You must recognize that our view of Britain is very limited for most us because most of us have not actually been there. Our small little windows into your country are just that, small little windows. We see a few things every once in a while in the news, almost always coming out of London. We only have a small exposure to your actors and tv. I suspect that most of what we get portrays a view of London and not other areas. That term "bloody hell" is widely used in the Harry Potter books.

I suspect that you see a much wider array of our various cultures here in the U.S. through movies and imported TV shows that we see of yours. Very few of your TV shows make it here. The number of English actors I think of off the top of my head I could probably count on one hand. The only current British TV show that I know of that has any following here is Doctor Who.

Usually if you Brits have any good shows, we just redo them here with American actors in an American setting rather than show the British version.

I have know a few Brits here in the US and everyone of them seemed like a decent person.

I think bloody hell is just a common phrase like any nation of people might use. I have been to England 4 times and I love it and I lilke the Bristish people. They are so polite and quiet and dignified. Even the punk rockers I encountered were polite. I seen many with bad teeth but then again I see many Americans with bad teeth.

We get that from the movies I suppose. I haven't met many Brits but I am not one to believe the stereotypes that are portrayed on TV. Some of us do think for ourselves. And I know that TV and movies are usually an exaggeration of the real world.
But the general consensus among SOME Americans who don't know better is: British have bad teeth, British women don't shave, British don't shower daily, British say "bloody" a lot, British are unattractive, British are arrogant.
But here's a positive stereotype: Have you ever noticed in the movies the intelligent professor is usually British?

And, all the English see us as fat, ignorant, loud, and completely unaware. Generalizations suck, don't they?

I have been lucky enough to meet people from many different cultures and backgrounds (including English). The few people from England I have met were very polite, sophisticated, and all around good people. I do not see the British as anything bad...some of my favorite bands are from Britain. Without England, we would be missing out greatly.

Stereotypes are everywhere, its not like George Bush has done America's image any favours and he definately isn't a reflection on my family over there.
But admittedly I do find the teeth thing offensive, for a harmless stereotype its pretty rude. But then again we aren't exactly nice to the French...

Yeah, from what we see about the British on the late-night talk shows, you have the stereotype down pretty well. Don't all guys there look like Prince Charles

I see the British as people, with cool accents. Though I guess we have the accents to you.

I'm sure you have a few mistaken notions about the US as well. Come and visit! You can straighten us out, and we'll get to show you around.

You're welcome in New York anytime!
