Freedom of speech is NEVER a bad thing-It's the speaker who cannot use it wisely that we should worry about.

Never!! Especially when you consider the alternative. If there was no freedom of speech, then you could theoretically be arrested if you said something that offended someone - or spoke out on a public issue you disagreed with - or agreed with.

One of the greatest freedoms we have is the right to speak our minds. Unfortunately, in a democracy, you have to take the good with the bad and the awful!!

No I do not feel that we should ever alter our freedom of speech ever, or we will not know who the hell our enemies are. It is unfortunate but that is the way of the world. Silence is not golden in most cases as you see for yourself on this web. Allowing people to vent then you can see where they stand and how they believe, and it my allow us to prepare for any attacks as well. There is always going to be evil in this world and so we must face it and sometimes as a good Christian take it on the cheek and turn it to the other and that is what makes us better than others, our tolerance of the ignorant is one reason and the hope of helping the ones for the future to change our environment to a more peaceful planet. Amen

No... freedom of speech is just that... a freedom. That doesn't mean that speech can't get you into trouble... like yelling "fire" in a crowded theater. We can't keep people from being stupid, or stupid people from listening. If speech is used to encourage hatred and delusions, well, people are free to listen.

We need to accept a little bad with the much greater good.

Freedom of speech is a good thing, however, too much freedom can lead to misuse of this freedom. Newspapers and newscasters in the USA openly express opinions many of which are not absolutely correct, or true. It is then very difficult to make these newspapers retract what they said because they immediately throw the First Amendment at you.

nope, I think freedom of speech should be approximately 100% free. But freedom comes with responsibility. In this case the responsibility to educate the population (specifically your children) on how to find the truth in a given situation etc. I honestly believe that most of the racial stuff would evaporate with education, maybe I am optimistic.

No. That's what freedom of speech is all about. Everyone - even the ignorant - have the right to speak their mind. Honestly, if hatred and the like didn't exist, don't you think the world would be a bit boring? Freedom of speech - no matter what format it's utilized - makes the world a colorful place.

Freedom of speech, as provided for in the First Amendment, is the right to articulate your political, economic and social opinions, without fear of government interference of retaliation.

It is not the right to abuse others, nor is it the right to offend decency.

The First Amendment gives Americans the right to criticize our politicians, their policies, and to point our corruption in government. Americans are free to promoted their own ideas as to what our foreign and domestic policies should be.

The First Amendment does not defend a person's right to libel or slander another. It does not give a person the right to incite hatred against another individual, group, religion or nationality.

And it does not give a person the right to scream obscenities in public.

Here is a point to remember: Politicians who want to limit freedom of speech, encourage irresponsible speech: racial threats, public obscenity & c. If you want to keep your rights, use them responsibly.

Like anything, freedom--including freedom of speech--can be abused. However, you are making the worst possible mistake in blaming freedom of speech--and not the individuals who abuse it. That attitude is the exact distortion that all would be dictators use to excuse their grabs for power--and you--and all of us--should be on our guard against it.
