Sounds like if you get a 3-4 inch bottom feeder you may be over stocked. Rule of thumb is one inch of freshwater fish per gallon of water. This rule changes for larger fish though as larger fish produce more waste. So, in a 10 gallon tank with guppy's and neons I would say no more than 8 fish.

As for the bottom feeders, Cory Cats are nice, but they do school so you will need at least 2 or 3. If you get one that is 3-4 inches you will need the whole tank to support them.

Good Luck

1. Most cory catfish only ge to be about 3 inches. There are many different types and they are great nonagressive bottom feeders.

2. General rule is every inch per fish needs one gallon of water. This doesn't always work - but it's the general rule. You will need to take into account how big the fish you have will get as well, not the size they are right now.

3. I doubt the guppy is trying to school. It just might appear that way.

4. Algea is not dangerous, a little bit will not harm the fish.

5. It could either be a build up of uneaten fish food or you could be developing a fungus in the tank.

Cory cats are great small bottom feeders and just about perfect for a ten gallon tank.

The only way to really know how much your tank will hold is to know a bit about eash type of fish you have. You should know how big it gets when grown and how active it is.

The guppy isn't really schooling, it just seems like it. They will follow other fish around some but will stop before long.

Some algae won't hurt the tank at all, in fact some people say it helps the tank and in ways it does.

That whitish gunk is probably uneaten food that is growing mold. You can take it out and wash it off to get rid of it. If that's a real log it might be mold in the wood and I would suggest you take it out and leave it out.

Hope this helps!

Small bottom feeders--some cories like pygmy cories. They might do okay in a 10 gallon tank, you need at least 3 of them because they need to be in a group. However, it depends on what else you have in your tank. There is no magic "number" of fish or inches of fish that can fit in a 10 gallon tank, it is a matter of researching your fish before you buy them, finding out if they will do okay in that size tank, and figuring out how "messy" they are--how much they will add to the bioload. If we knew what you have in your tank already, that would help. Most beginners tend to overstock.
