I find that the Asian(Japanese) cars give the best mileage, they seem to build the best little efficient motors out there. The Americans like to make up for lack of power and design by putting in a larger displacement engine, hence more gas consumption.

asian cars have high compression ratios and have crazy valve timing to use very little fuel efficiently;sheet metal is extremely thin (so car is light) so it will rust right through if you live in snowy areas really high weight/power and displacement/ power ratio (honda s2000 makes 110 hp/ litre)
european is more performance oriented so gas milage isnt as good but really high weight/ power and displacement/power
american has a very low weight/power and displacement/power, resale value is crap so i would never buy a domestic brand
