The number of emergency calls went from 280,000 in 2000 to 400,000 in 2001. Find the percent increase.


Once again, I suck at math... I know you have to subtract it, but then I get lost ...

280,000 - 100%
400,000 - ?

?= 142.85%
then substract 100% and you'll get 42.85%

the equation is (400,000-280,000)/280,000=42.86% increase

Check your answer by saying 280,000 x 42.86% =120,000 ; then add 120,000 to 280,000 to get 400,000

first subrtact 280k from 400k, 120k. then divide 120k by 280k. 0.428 and so on. multiply that by 100, 42.8%
