I'm assuming you're in middle or high school, right? You shouldn't be concerned with what others think of you and do what makes you happy. I know that first hand. In high school I was a Varsity Letterman playing three sports...but you know what else I was apart of? I was the co-captain for my schools Varsity Chess Team. Did I sometimes get jabbed for being apart of such a "nerdy" club? Of course. But I didn't let that stop me.
You have to remember that gradeschool is only a small fraction of your life...before you know it you'll be in college and will have nearly all the people you meant in high school no longer in your life. You may be teased here and there for a few years...but the enjoyement of doing something you love will last you a lifetime.

Chess is a great game. I play chess with a few friends and they range from hippies to bodybuilders to musicians, so it isn't just for nerds. Although, I was a bit of a nerd when I first started playing.
Don't let what other people think dictate your actions! Join the chess club and have fun!

joining the chess club doesn't make you a nerd, when i was in high school i was a starter for the football team and still made my name in the chess club, do what you want to do and let your personality be the judge on the nerd aspect

Life is too short to worry about what others think of you, if doing chess is something you really love to do then do it, never let other peoples perceptions of you dictate what you want to do or be,
so be yourself and play chess and you will find friends that will love you for who you are, whether its a person who plays chess or not.

Never forget, nerds age well. High school will end. You will go to a good college and get a good job, while those classmates of yours who think image is everything will spend the rest of their lives trying to relive their glory days.

No if you do not want to be thought as a nerd. Yes if you do not care what anyone else thinks.

If you want to and be proud! It's a game where I know the rules but have never had the patience to learn, if you know what I mean.
