Vancouver is surrounded by lots of suburbs that are easily accessed by public transit. In particular you may want to research areas close to the Skytrain. Areas to consider are Burnaby, New Westminster, Coquitlam, Surrey, North Vancouver -- all accessible by skytain.
In Vancouver itself you just mainly want to stay away from the downtown east side. There are a wide variety of prices in each area, you just have to search a little. Also to note that West Vancouver is different from the West End. (confusing I know)
Good luck with your search -- classifieds in the Vancouver Sun and the Vancouver Province should give you a good idea of rental prices.

inexpensive is frequently a topic in Vancouver with the acute authentic sources prices and longstanding low emptiness cost. The 20 minutepersistent would want to be a contact a mission pondering UBC is form on the fringe of city besides the undeniable fact that it is precise-serviced through transit a minimum of throughout the time of school hours. the nearest neighbourhoods will be UBC area itself, which has houses and some properties, Kitsilano or Kerrisdale which do too, and also you're waiting to wish to judge the more beneficial effective street area from about 16th to 40 first. the first 3 neighbourhoods are truly upscale in words of costs yet there are fairly some fairly priced position of living suites there. major street will be truly more beneficial cost-useful and fairly matches the arts/bohemian area of subject matters. All those neighbourhoods are truly solid, and solid places to stay, major street being a contact more beneficial lively and larger 'downtown' with the undemanding subject matters that contain that. it is interesting, though, and is a particular community the position some people stay for a protracted time. i have were given regular fairly some those who've lived there all their lives and does no longer stay everywhere else in Vancouver.

nice apartments in the area
I would move to NewMinister instead...most 1 bedroom start
at 600.00 and close to sky train
As with any large city there are trouble areas everywhere and of course stay away from East Hastings at night
