Of the ones I've been subscribed to since beginning of 2005, the only one that has actually paid me anything is CIAO - http://www.ciao.co.uk/reg.php?AffiliateId=5613249
It not only offers surveys, but gives you the chance to write product reviews (which seems to be where the real money is on there), and do price comparisons on products too.
Minimum amount you need to earn is about £5 - £6, and so far I've had 2, and a few pence short of bagging my 3rd.
Most the other survey sites for the UK only enter you in a sweepstake, and in 7yrs of having the Internet CIAO is the only place I've actually earned money rather than spent the stuff.
Also http://www.yougov.com/ does paid surveys, but has a larger minimum payout, so gotta wait longer to build it up.

You should join http://www.moneymakers.pdnr.com and http://www.creativecash.pdnr.com to make money online. There are no upfront costs, and the sites are legit. I have received many checks from them before. You earn money by completing surveys, and trying free trials, suck as Netflix. Get a few friends to sign up as you referrals and you can earn even more, plus a $1 bonus on one of the sites. I've made as much as $75 a day! If your not sure about joining, here is some proof of members' earnings: http://forum.treasuretrooper.com/index.php?showtopic=17509&st=580 Try it out!

Best, legal and safe way to earn on internet is by joining paid survey sites. Paid survey sites pay you for your opinion on various topics.
Don’t pay for any survey program to join. There are many free to join paid survey like survey savvy they pay more then 5 $ per survey. Always check for on which site you are registering is BBB (Better Business Bureaus) certified.

I've listed most of the sites I have taken surveys through and actually been paid (or received other rewards like gift cards or CD'S) on the following webpage:
http://www.windhavenweb.com/surveys
I list how they pay you, what I like and dislike about them, whether they have an affiliate or referral program, etc. (And yes, if I say they have an affiliate program, I'm part of it, and make a commission when someone signs up through that link...I like to be up front about that. Since your friend is already taking paid surveys, in stead of signing up through my links you might want to ask her what sites she's part of and have her refer you--that way she will get the credit).
Here are some tips to avoid scams. Don't sign up for any survey site which asks you to pay to access the surveys. Also watch for language like "get paid for taking surveys AND SIGNING UP FOR OFFERS" if you don't want to have to sign up for stuff with other companies to get paid.
Always carefully read their terms of service and privacy policy. If in their privacy policy they say they only use aggregated info, this is GOOD SIGN they are legit. Aggregated info information that is grouped together so it can't be connected with anyones personal identification like name, e-mail, phone or address. That's what survey sites SHOULD collect. Avoid sites that say they give, rent, or sell any personal information (info that is not aggregated) to third parties (unless you really don't mind getting junk mail, telemarketing calls, and spam).
Also, never sign up for a survey through an unsolicited e-mail--since these might not even be from the site they claim to be, but could be a phishing scheme to get your information and mis-use it.
Here are two other sites which are very helpful
