the NAACP being the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Why is it important, or necessary, to have an organization like them in society today?

Because we still have the vestiges of prejudice and racism in our society. Societies such as these ( and there are many such societies for all different ethnic and religious groups) provide many services for their members, and provide representation for these groups in the larger society.

Their main function today is to be an arm of the Democratic Party. The National Black Caucus is a much more balanced, somewhat less political organization. Good Luck!

The NAACP is a politcal advocacy group. Their function is to promote civil rights and equal access for blacks. Why are they necessary? Why is the NRA necessary?

I have no idea. Most of their leaders seem to be self-serving.

I don't know how society is holding "colored" people back these days. Ask Oprah, Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Colin Powell, Eddie Murphy, Outkast, Beyonce, Justice Brown, Ed Bradley, Danny Glover, etc, etc, etc

It seems like if you work hard in America, you can get rich regardless of your "color".

Because there are still societal reasons for why certain minorties are still not getting ahead. This was made very clear to me today:

This morning, my daughter had her college singing audition for music school. She did a great job and was basically told that she would get in. One of her friends, who is black, went today without his parents because they have to work 2 jobs to keep the family going in this area (they moved here so that their kids could go to the good public schools in our area, and not the awful ones in Baltimore city), he can't afford private lessons like we provide for our daughter, so he hasn't had the kind of help he needs to sing a good audition, and he has no way of affording college unless he is given a scholarship or is able to borrow it all, whereas we've saved money for our daghter to attend. This was just made so very clear to me today, and I truly believe that his parents are doing all they can, they are just behind in trying to raise their quality of life in an America where they grew up with great predjudice.
