I'm on the final upgrade task for the computer I inhierited from my folks after they got their new one. Currently, mine sports 1GB of RAM(PC2100 SDRAM), a GeForceFX5500 video card, a SoundBlaster Audigy sound card and both a 52X CD-R and 16X DVD-RW drive. (I'm obviously rebuilding this thing, yeah?). Problem is that it has a 1.8 GHz Intel Celeron processor.(yes, it is an eMachine, or was, depending on the outcome.) Not enough juice for me. Can anyone recommend a good idea for a Socket 478 processor that may work well with my system? I've looked online at Newegg and such, but some of the products seem to be more words than performance. My question is, "What would be optimal?"

I bought a 2.8GHz P4 for my socekt 478 mobo last year. It was about $75 and was a significant upgrade from my P4 1.7 256 cache 400 fsb. I believe it's the highest chip you can get in that socket that doesn't support hyperthreading. Your mobo may or may not be compatible with hyperthreading.

socket 478 is old
good luck finding NOS ( new old stock ) in terms of a 2.6Ghz pentium 4 with 533 fsb, as that was fastest 478 socket before the pin / voltage change, but since you have pc2100, that's a much slower ram
your better off getting a new mobo / cpu combo
trouble is most now do not have AGP slots so you have to get a new vid card ( unless your vid card is a PCI ) card

A P4 would be alot better than that celeron. ..its a start.

I personally don't think buying a new processor for that socket will last you very long. You'd be happier with a newer motherboard/cpu (skt 478 is old!)

it depends on the mother board in your machine. It would be a waste of money to purchase a cpu that is beyond the limits of your machine. It will just be clocked down to work on your machine.

This would give you a nice boost, it is a P4, and you may need to get a new heatsink and fan.
