I own an ASUS A8Js laptop
Intel Core 2 Duo T2700 2.00 Ghz
RAM 2GB
nVidia GeForce Go 7700

I would like to speed up my computer without a system reformat, I am running in Windows XP Professional SP2 and am NOT looking to upgrade to Vista. How can I improve the performance and speed of my notebook computer?

There are a number of things you can do without reinstalling.

Turn off services: there are a number of services that are running that affect performance. Do a search and experiment, you can always turn these back on.

Programs Running: a number of programs install so they are always running (they show up by the clock). Config the programs to not run, or run MSCONFIG and turn off almost everything in the "Startup" except your virus scanner.

Indexer: You can turn off the file indexer per Microsoft. It can really affect performance! Right-click on the C: drive and unclick Indexing. Ignore any warnings about files.

Defrag: Defrag your hard drive once a month.

Remove Spyware: Use Spybot or install Microsoft Defender to kill off spyware. Spyware REALLY slows your PC.

Hard Drive: some laptops come with a SLOW hard drive that affects performance tremendously. You can replace the hardrive with a 5400 or 7200 rpm harddrive, really helps. If "Ghost" is used, the new drive will be identical with your old one.

Temp Files: Set Internet Explorer to empty the Temporary files on exit. Delete the cookies regularly.

Cooling: I always have a cooler under my laptop (with fans). Seems to help the speed somehow.

All these can be done without reinstall. In fact, if you reinstall, you still need to do them!

Good luck.

There are numerous ways to get the most speed out of your laptop. First, terminate and/or uninstall any applications that run stealthfully in the background that you don't need or don't use. Do a Control-Alt-Del to see them all, or better yet, download and run Security Task Manager (free!) to see and stop any that are hidden processes. Many machines come with a lot of pre-installed garbage that is mainly for promotional purposes and hardly ever gets used. Just make sure you don't erase anything that you need, or that is critical to the running of the machine (i.e. system files). Second, increase your RAM, although 2GB should be enough for most things. I don't know how fast your hard drive is, but many laptops skimp when it comes to hard drives, so if you only have a 4200rpm drive, you may want to consider a faster one. Also, use the Registry Editor (Start->Run->regedit) to manually clean your system registry, if you know how to do it. If you don't, be careful...use a program like Ad-Aware to do it. Finally, periodically defragment your hard drive using the Windows defragmentor. I recommend doing this at least once a month, particularly if you routinely write and/or erase a lot of data to and from your drive. This should substantially increase the speed of your laptop, especially for data-intensive applications.

HOW MUCH FASTER YOU WANT IT TO GO!! You got one of the best and fastest processor out in the market right now. You have more than enough ram to quickly load up applications, what more do you want! Remember is a laptop theres not much you can do with it. The only thing i would suggest is to close down any programs or applications you are not using as it slows down your computer speed and only have the ones that you need to work with.
