I live in GA and I prune mine late March, early April. They seem to bloom better that way. I took an old timers advice years ago and beat them with a broomstick before they bloomed. It seemed to work!

In North East Florida you have to prune by August or you cut back the blooms for next year. I grew up in the ornamental horticultural back ground.

I have heard right after blooming because the new buds form that same year and stay as buds all winter long and bloom in the spring or summer.

Look at your bushes right now and you will see them.

You prune them after they flower in the spring but before June. Because after June they start to set their flowers for the following year.
